Tap below the ship to move down, and above it to move up. Tap the right side of the screen to fire your weapons. If you hold down to move the ship you will use your fuel which only regenerates when you are not tapping to move.
Use the training stages to build credits to upgrade your ship if you are having trouble with a stage.
