Subtext - Reading together is better—especially with access to the world’s largest collection of books! Subtext powers the first community in the pages of ebooks. With Subtext, you can engage in conversations with friends, authors and experts and access all types of information and multimedia—right in the margins of your books. It’s like sitting in your living room reading a book surrounded by your friends, the author and, if you’re up for the extra company, the most interesting people in the Subtext community. A totally new reading experience!
Subtext is launching with 18 popular books enhanced with original author and expert notes. You can preview all of them-or any book, for that matter-just by downloading the application. Examples of enhanced books in Subtext:
• A Game of Thrones with insider commentary from George R.R. Martin’s editor and researcher (who also runs Westeros.org)
• Snow Flower and the Secret Fan brought to life with scenes from the new movie and interviews with author Lisa See and director Wayne Wang
• Under the Tuscan Sun with updates on characters and new off-the-beaten-path locations directly from Frances Mayes
• Wicked Bugs with quirky notes and multimedia added by author Amy Stewart—eek!
• Miss Lonelyhearts beautifully annotated by book critic David L. Ulin
Plus a dozen more books—many of them great reading group choices—enhanced with one-of-a-kind content. Better yet, you can read books from Google Books, Kobo and a host of other online retailers in Subtext. In fact, any Google Book you purchase (or own) automatically appears on your bookshelf in Subtext.
Subtext offers all the functionality of other ereading apps—adjustable fonts, brightness control, a built-in dictionary and so on—but that’s not what makes it so unique. Right from the pages of your books, you can:
• Engage in conversations with friends, community members, authors and experts, even if you’re are not on the same page at the same time
• Access author, expert and community insights and information and contribute your own
• Explore links to relevant articles, images and multimedia on the Web and add your own
• Browse and preview books on your friends’ bookshelves and a collection of featured shelves
• Personalize the experience so you only see the people and information that matter to you
• Access the world’s largest collection of digital books on the Google eBookstore

What's New in 2.1:

· Assignments: Teachers can create activities inside any book or article, set a due date, then give feedback and a grade. Try tagging character traits, citing key passages, or tying in a writing prompt. Browse community assignments to get started.
· Google Docs: Students can copy their highlights and notes to Google Docs, closing the loop from reading to writing. An automatic bibliography is added to save time!
· Text to Speech by Passage: Turn on text-to-speech to listen to any selection of text or the whole page.
· Refined 'My Library': A streamlined design makes it easier to start using Subtext for both teachers and students.

What's New in 1.5:

· Highlighting & Tagging: Teachers and students can highlight text, color code it and tag it as an example of a literary device or with a unique label like 'Morality in Shakespeare.' Notes can be marked as private as students read or study, shared with teachers in response to an assignment, or shared with a class or project group.
· Text to Speech: Students can read any digital book or document with text to speech enabled. The voiceover maps to the text so students can make connections between the words they're hearing and seeing-and even pauses when they read or add a note.
· Filtering for Discussions/Student Activity: Now we give you more control over the notes you see in your Discussions Stream and when you view a student's activity in Subtext. Only want to read a student's Book Blog or quiz responses? No problem!

What's New in 1.4:

· Save to Subtext: You can save web pages, including new articles and blog posts, to your personal and group shelves in Subtext. 'Save to Subtext' is available in the app under 'Adding Books & Docs' and via a proprietary bookmarklet found on subtext.com/edu.
· Offline mode: You and your students can view and add annotations while you read without web connectivity. Your new notes will be uploaded the next time you're online.
· Multiple Logins: Subtext supports multiple logins, so students can share an iPad (and books and documents) without ever seeing each other's notes.
· Edmodo login and social sharing: When you log into Subtext with Edmodo, your Edmodo groups are imported into Subtext as closed reading groups; then you can share notes left in Subtext out to your students on the Edmodo stream. [Teachers-only]
· Text tagging: You and your students can highlight an excerpt of text, tag it and add a note for additional context. (Great for students working through a text!)
· Restricted student setting: You can change the status of all the students in a group from unrestricted (our default setting) to restricted. Restricted students cannot surf the web, create group or share notes from group to group [Teachers-only]
