The Agatha Christie Collection - Match wits with Hercule Poirot, or test your crime-solving skills against Tuppence Cowley and Tommy Beresford in The Agatha Christie Collection, containing two of Agatha Christie's most famous novels: "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" and "The Secret Adversary."

Agatha Christie was born in 1890 in Torquay, county of Devon, England. By December, 1926, she was already a well-known mystery writer, with a book on the best seller list, a husband - WWI air ace Archie Christie - and a seven-year-old daughter. All should have been well, but it wasn't - Archie was in love and having an affair with a younger woman, Nancy Neele, and his wife was understandably nervous and depressed.

"He tapped his forehead. 'These little gray cells.
It is up to them--as you say over here.' "
Hercule Poirot
The Mysterious Affair at Styles

On the evening of Friday, December 3, 1926, Agatha Christie disappeared from her home in a small town in Berkshire. The next day, her car, containing clothes and identification, was found abandoned by the side of the road. 15,000 volunteers searched the countryside, authorities dredged a nearby lake, and Christie's picture was displayed prominently on the front page of every English newspaper.

Vacationers at a health spa in Harrogate commented to a fellow guest, a Mrs. Neele, how much she resembled the pictures in the paper, to which she just laughed. Finally, the police were called to the spa, and they brought along Archie Christie. When she saw her husband, Agatha exclaimed: "Fancy, my brother has just arrived." The Christies immediately went into seclusion, and claimed that Agatha was suffering from amnesia. Two years later they quietly divorced, and for the remainder of her life Agatha Christie refused to ever discuss her 11-day disappearance. In 1930, she married the English archaeologist Max Mallowan, and they remained happily married until her death in 1976.
