Beatrix Potter was born in 1866 into a well-to-do English family and, while not formally educated, she became interested in the small animals she encountered during family vacations. Potter published her first book, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit," in 1902 and followed it with 22 other works all published in a small format for little hands.
After marrying for the first time at age 47, she bought large tracts of land in the English Lake District and ran a sheep farm. She was forced to give up writing in 1920 due to poor eyesight, and died in 1943. In her will, she left over 4,000 acres to the English National Trust, and it is now part of the Lake District National Park.
