The Charlie Chan Collection - He was the most famous detective on the Honolulu Police Force, and his 44 movies were huge hits during the 1930s and 1940s. Now, you can read five of Earl Derr Biggers' Charlie Chan books in The Charlie Chan Collection.
The collection includes:
Behind That Curtain
Keeper of the Keys
The Black Camel
The Chinese Parrot
The House Without a Key
In the films, Charlie Chan was accompanied on his cases by one or more of his sons - #1 Son, #2 Son - you get the idea - who always thought they knew more than their "Pop", but it was always Charlie who solved the case, all the while delivering pithy Chinese proverbs.
"Not yet--patience and mulberry leaf make silk shawl."
"Every man must wear out at least one pair of fool's shoes."
"Careless shepherd make excellent dinner for wolf." Charlie Chan
Earl Derr Biggers was born in Warren, Ohio on August 24, 1884 and attended Harvard University. He worked as a newspaper writer before starting his writing career in 1913. It was in 1919, during a vacation to Honolulu with his wife, that Biggers "discovered" Charlie Chan, who was a unique hero for the time, "trustworthy, benevolent, and philosophical." All but one of the six Charlie Chan books were turned into immensely popular films, but sadly, Biggers did not live to share Charlie's sucess, he died of a heart attach at age 48 in April, 1933. The Charlie Chan films continued to be released until 1949.
