A fragmented file system leads to performance degradation. Instead of a file being in one continuous "chunk" on the card, it is split into many pieces which can be located anywhere on the card. By doing this, additional positioning tasks are introduced into what should be a sequential reading operation, often greatly reducing speed, especially on micro drives but also affecting flash memory because of read-ahead and FAT caching, and the way information is physically stored on a storage card. Flash memory is organized and accessed in blocks and the performance penalty for accessing sequential data stored in two different blocks is substantial.

The second reason is to reduce the possibility of data loss. If the files are kept together in adjacent clusters, the chances of recovering them, even with third-party recovery tools, increase measurably.
