"For years past I have continually been conscious of some power behind the malefactor, some deep organizing power which forever stands in the way of the law, and throws it shield over the wrong-doer. ... For years I have endeavored to break through the veil which shrouded it, and at last the time came when I seized my thread and followed it, until it led me, after a thousand cunning windings, to ex-Professor Moriarty of mathematical celebrity.
The Final Problem The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes Arthur Conan Doyle
In 1891, the serial publication of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" in The Strand Magazine catapulted its author Arthur Conan Doyle, a shy young eye surgeon from Edinburgh, into the public eye, but Doyle soon tired of the public adulation and resolved to kill off his creation. In 1893, Doyle sent Holmes and his arch nemesis, Professor Moriarty, locked together in a death grip over Switzerland's Reichenbach Falls in the "The Final Problem," the last story in "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes." However, Doyle didn't count on the public's response, Londoners wore black arm bands mourning their favorite detective, and after a ten year hiatus, Doyle was forced to revive his creation in "The Return of Sherlock Holmes."
