I. Compatibility

Requirements: Palm OS 5.0 and higher (also called Palm OS Garnet)

The sixth major release of the BEIKS Dictionary Reader for Palm OS is strictly limited to Palm devices running OS 5. Those include all smart phones and PDAs made by Palm since 2005, specifically the Treo and Centro lines of smart phones and the Zire and Tungsten lines of PDAs.

Sony PDAs as well as older Palm models running Palm OS 4 are no longer supported.
However an older version of the application that works on such devices may be present upon request to BEIKS' customer support.

II. Installation

The BEIKS reference applications are distributed in several different formats, aiming to cover the widest possible range of users and installation scenarios.

WARNING: Due to their large size, installation of the talking dictionaries may take 30 to 90 minutes HotSync time to complete!
If HotSync is still running after 90 minutes or if you have trouble synchronizing from then on please read How To Clear HotSync from files scheduled for installation.

II.I) Direct over-the-air installation to Palm smart phone
One of the easiest installation forms is the direct, over-the-air download and installation from a mobile website like http://mobile.beiks.com.
Pointing the browser of your Palm powered smart phone to such a site will let you quickly and easily download and run an installer for the desired application.
The limitation of this approach is that some very large applications (like the talking dictionaries) may not be available for OTA download due to their large size.
Another inconvenience of this approach is the difficulty in installing parts of the application in the main memory and other parts at the device's external storage card.

II.II) Desktop installation through a Palm Desktop powered host computer
Probably the most popular method for deploying Palm OS application is installation through Palm Desktop.

For Microsoft Windows users, we have prepared a very easy, self-installing distributive, which guides through the installation process of the desired application.

For Mac OS X and Linux users, as well as advanced Windows users who for whatever reason do not like to use the above self-installing distributive, there is also a ZIP packaged distributive with all necessary installation files.
ZIP files are very commonly used due to their ability to compact a number of files into a single file that is fast and easy to distribute across Internet. Once received locally, the ZIP file needs to be unpacked (decompressed) so that the files are extracted from it and operated as desired.

Once extracted from the ZIP file, the Palm files must be passed to Palm's install tool. Some files (usually all files above 500 kB) may be scheduled for installation on the external media card while others MUST be installed in the main device memory.

For more details please see the application's User Guide.

Activation

Each commercial reference offers a fully-functional evaluation version, but requires purchase and activation for continuous use.

The way it works is this: you, the customer, are given the ability to download and evaluate the application in its full functionality; the evaluation may be limited in time or there might be on-screen activation reminders requiring for manual intervention in order to proceed to the desired functionality.

In both cases, the application is still fully functional and provides maximum evaluation conditions.

Should you decide that you like it, you are required to purchase a personal commercial license in the form of an activation key.

This key is unique and special for you and is usually based on unique device property, e.g. the unique synchronization name used by the device. BEIKS provides special means for transferring the license when you upgrade or change your device, so that you do not have to order the application again.

To purchase the key, follow the on-screen instructions in the activation reminder form.

Once you have the purchased activation key, please enter it in the same activation reminder form as requested.

If properly entered, the key will activate the application and stop the reminder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How can I contact BEIKS?
A. For up-to-date list of our contacts please visit www.beiks.com/support.htm .
Of course support@beiks.com and sales@beiks.com are supposedly available at all times.

Q. How to clear HotSync from files scheduled for installation?
A. If HotSync starts and seemingly never ends the first thing to look for is files scheduled for installation; sometimes those files are corrupt and confuse HotSync while other times they are just too big and again confuse it, leading to infinite or finite unsuccessful HotSync.
Palm Desktop comes with two separate applications that are most commonly used for installing files through HotSync - InstApp and QuickInstall. You will need to run each one and make sure there are no files in it.
Both applications can be found in Palm Desktop's folder using File Explorer.
