Bluetooth Setup

In order to use MobiMouse over Bluetooth your computer must have a Bluetooth adapter or built in Bluetooth.  Many notebook computers have built in Bluetooth. We recommend you use the Bluetooth software that came with your adapter or PC. Using bluetooth software that was not designed for your hardware can result in unpredictable behaviour.

In addition, you must configure a Bluetooth Serial Port in order to use MobiMouse.

There are several different Bluetooth software packages available for Windows and each is slightly different in the method used to setup a Bluetooth Serial Port.   In general, you will want to open your Bluetooth software in Windows and setup an incoming Bluetooth Serial Port.  We recommend you set this to Automatically Startup.  See below for screen shots which show how to set up a Serial Port service with various Bluetooth software.  Please refer to your Bluetooth software manual or help screen for detailed instructions on how to configure a Bluetooth Serial Port.

When you configure a Bluetooth Serial Port, the Bluetooth software will assign a Windows COM port to the Serial Port.  You must make note of which COM port has been assigned.  For example, it might be COM5, or COM8, etc.

The general setup procedure is as follows:

1. Configure an incoming COM port using your Bluetooth Software
2. Open MobiMouse on the PC and select the COM port you configured
3. Pair your BlackBerry with your PC but do not connect

If the BlackBerry asks you if you want to connect to the PC say "No".  This is typically a headset connection and will interfere with your ability to connect with MobiMouse.

The Bluetooth config screen is located on the BlackBerry under Options > Bluetooth or Settings > Options > Bluetooth.

It is important that the BlackBerry recognizes that you have a Bluetooth Serial Port running on the PC.  To verify this go to the Bluetooth configuration screen on the BlackBerry, select the name of your PC, and choose "Device Properties" from the menu.  You should see various "Services" listed.  The serial port service will be listed as a COM port (eg. COM5), "Bluetooth Serial Port" or "Serial Port A", depending on which Bluetooth software you are using on the PC.  If you don't see any of these listed, choose "Refresh Service List" from the Device Properties screen on the BlackBerry.  MobiMouse won't work if the BlackBerry does not recognize a Bluetooth Serial Port on the PC.

Note: There appears to be an issue in late versions of BlackBerry OS 5.0 and early OS 6.0 where only one bluetooth serial port on the PC can be discovered. If you run into this problem you may have to disable other bluetooth serial ports and refresh the bluetooth service list. We have reported this issue to BlackBerry.

Note: The Microsoft Bluetooth stack will not activate the Bluetooth Serial Port unless MobiMouse is running and the correct COM port is open in MobiMouse on the PC.  Use the "Refresh Service List" option if you need to.

You can set your PC as a trusted bluetooth device so that you don't have to enter a passcode everytime you want to connect.  To do this, go to the Bluetooth configuration screen on the Blackberry, select the name of your PC, and choose "Device Properties" from the menu.  Set the "Trusted" option to "Yes" and save.  You can leave encryption enabled.

Double click the MobiMouse icon in the windows system tray and select the Bluetooth tab.  Select the COM port that was assigned by your Bluetooth Software.  The port status needs to be open.  Push the OK button to hide MobiMouse and send it to the System Tray.

Pair your BlackBerry with your computer using the Bluetooth configuration screen on the BlackBerry.  You can use the menu option to open the Bluetooth Configuration from MobiMouse. This menu option is available when you have Bluetooth selected.

Once you have everything setup you are ready to connect.  Open MobiMouse on the BlackBerry and select the Bluetooth connection option.  Next, choose the name of the "Device" and the correct Bluetooth Serial "Port" and press the "Connect" button.

If you have problems connecting right after you reboot the BlackBerry try disabling "Connect On Power Up". To do this, go to the Bluetooth Config Screen on the BlackBerry, choose "Options" from the menu and change "Connect On Power Up" to "No".
