I. Introduction
BDicty (pronounced "bee-dikti") is a specialized
application for reference content, mostly dictionaries. Its main purpose
is to provide quick and handy reference in particular area and allow the
user to store/comment notes on the go.
BDicty is different from popular document readers
by a sense that it is strictly oriented towards indexed reference content,
allowing both better data optimization and simplified user interface.
It is also better than a general-purpose database
application because it works with much better compressed files.
BDicty operates with data files called lexicons, or sometimes dictionaries. Those contain the actual reference information that the program displays for you.
There are different types of lexicons - from language translators through verb conjugation tables to monolingual thesauri and from medical acronyms through compact medical dictionaries to pocket medical encyclopedias. The sky is the limit for the available reference content. Visit our website http://www.beiks.com for complete list of lexicons for BDicty.
Please pay attention the various data files (lexicons) can actually come from various vendors. Some of them are free, some are commercial. Some of them might be bundled with the program, others may be available separately.
BDicty is available on several handheld platforms, including Palm OS, Windows CE and Embedix (on Sharp Zaurus).
II. Working
with the program
A) Opening dictionary lexicons
As soon as the program is run, it searches the available media for
installed lexical files. It searches in the main memory, the SD card and
on the MC card. It then automatically loads the last used lexicon. If it
was run for first time or if the last used lexicon could not be found,
BDicty opens the first lexicon in the list.
The name of the current lexicon is displayed in the application title, right after application's own title. For example, you can see "BDicty - EnglishGold", which would mean that the currently opened lexicon is the English Gold lexicon.
You can change to another lexicon by taping the toolbar "Library" button
() and selecting
another lexicon in the list there. While the list of titles in the library
is displayed, pay attention to how an icon indicates which ones are installed
in the main memory and which ones - on external media card.
B) Dictionaries and phrasebooks
There are two different types of lexicons - regular dictionary
lexicons and phrasebooks; they are somewhat similar yet different.
Regular dictionaries are like the plain paper dictionaries where you
can enter a word and lookup the article for it - translation, definition
or whatever that is. Words are ordered alphabetically and you can browse
or type in the word you want to look up.
Phrasebooks, on the other hand, are not ordered alphabetically. Instead,
they are organized in topics and each topic contains relatively
small amount of entries so that you can quickly browse them and pick the
one you need. The topics are available from the drop-down list above the
list with phrases.
Certain phrasebooks can have the ability to pronounce the phrases. When
this is possible, the buton with image of a speaker will be displayed and
enabled. Tap on it to hear the displayed phrase.
C) Deleting lexicons
The lexicon files are just a single files, which can easily be deleted.
However, we recommend that you use the standard un-installation procedure
recommended by Sharp.
Before attempting any uninstallations, please remember to close the program.
D) Cross-lookup explained
The cross lookup is a very simple and useful feature, allowing you
for quick references of words within the currently displayed article. To
perform cross-reference lookup, select a word from the article field and
tap the cross-reference button on the toolbar ().
The program will analyze the currently open lexicon and if there is a reverse lexicon, it will first automatically open it. For example, if you have the German-English lexicon open and the program detects that there is an English-German lexicon installed, it will open it. If you are in a plain English dictionary lexicon (which obviously does not have reverse one), then the program will not open anything and proceed to the next step in the cross-lookup procedure.
Once the proper lexicon has been established, BDicty will paste the selected word in the word field and search for it.
Note there is no guarantee that the word will be found. That depends on the lexicons quality and completeness.
E) Adding/modifying articles
To add a new word or add comment to an existing word, tap the buttom
with a symbol for recording on it. Pay attention stock words can not be
modified, you can only add custom comments to them. On the other hand,
if you delete the article text for a manually added word, it will be automatically
removed from the current dictionary.
The program's preferences can be invoked through the menu or by the
toolbar preferences button ().
The panel view can be split in horizontal or vertical panes for the list of words and the article text.
The accessibility setting controls how the two panes should be aligned when the panel view is split vertically. Left-handed users may prefer to have the list of words on their left side.
The word field position setting controls where the input should be displayed - at the top, or at the bottom of the field. If you are using the soft screen keyboard, you may find the word field to be more convenient at the bottom end of the screen.
The menu position can also be at the top or at the bottom of the screen, giving you more comfort if you switch from other PDAs.
All dictionaries you install will have 30 days evaluation period during which you should decide if you like the program and the lexicons or not. You will be reminded about that every time you open a lexicon.
Once you obtain a registration code for particular lexicon, you will be able to open it and there will be no reminder.
Unlocking codes can be purchased at www.pocket-dictionaries.com , www.beiks.com or www.handango.com/beiks .
Registered users also get free support and program updates.
