Hiroshima and Nagasaki Remembered - August 6, 1945, 8:15 a.m. It was a warm summer morning, and in cloudless sky the drone of a single B-29 airplane could be heard. An instant later, a bluish white light flashed, and the city of Hiroshima was transformed into a raging inferno and a hell on earth. Captain Robert Lewis, co-pilot of the B-29, said, "My God, what have we done?"

More than 4 square miles of the city were instantly and completely devastated. 66,000 people were killed instantly, many vaporized where they stood. Thousands more would die in the days that followed, and still others in the months to come from the effects of radioactivity. This grim scenario was repeated 3 days later in the bombing of Nagasaki.

Now, in Hiroshima and Nagasaki Remembered, you can read first-hand accounts of what really happened, from the President who ordered the attacks, to the scientists who developed and tested the bomb, from the soldiers who planned and executed the attacks, to the victims on the ground, and from those sent to document the aftermath.

WARNING: This product contains both actual photographs of Japanese victims of the nuclear blasts, and frank accounts of their experiences. It is therefore not intended for readers under age 16 or for sensitive readers.

"It is certainly a good thing for the world that Hitler's crowd
or Stalin's did not discover this atomic bomb.
It seems to be the most terrible thing ever discovered,
but it can be made the most useful..."
Harry Truman's Private Diary
Entry for July 25, 1945

Did You Know? Nagasaki was not the primary target for the second bombing. The primary target was Kokura which was obscured by clouds.
