Smartphone & Pocket PC Buyer's Guide 2007 MS Reader - When the Pocket PC was announced in April of 2000, three U.S. manufacturers introduced one device each. When we gave out our first Best Software Awards in 2001, our 20-member Board of Experts selected 49 winners out of 300 nominations. Contrast that with the current situation. As of September 2006, 47 manufacturers offer over 100 Windows Mobile devices world wide. And this year, our 90-member Board of Experts nominated 694 titles from the over 3000 software products in our online Encyclopedia of Software and Accessories, and selected 91 Pocket PC software and 27 Smartphone software winners. The success of the Windows Mobile platform has encouraged the development of a greater variety of devices and software. In 2000 the challenge was finding a device or software program that met your needs. In 2006 the challenge is selecting from an increasing number of options.

This issue is our biggest challenge each year, checking prices and contact information, and making sure that everything is as up-to-date as it can be. However, new devices, software, and services inevitably show up after we send this to the printer. If you come across anything you think we missed, send the information to me (rich@pocketpcmag.com) and I'll check it out for a future issue.
