A fragmented file system leads to performance degradation. Instead of a file being in one continuous "chunk" on the card, it is split into many pieces which can be located anywhere on the card. The second reason is to reduce the possibility of data loss. If the files are kept together in adjacent clusters, the chances of recovering them, even with third-party recovery tools, increase measurably.
