Book Details

The Battle of the Books and Other Writings is a collection of Jonathan Swift's short writings that include satire, poetry, prayer, and essays. The title story is an attack on the scholarship of the day in the form of a quarrel between popular writers and classic authors. Also included is "Meditations Upon A Broomstick," "Predictions for 1708" (a parody of shoe-maker John Partridge's then-popular book of astrological predictions), and the poems "Baucis and Philemon," "The Logicians Refuted," "The Puppet Show," "Cadenus and Vanessa," "The Beasts' Confession," and several poems dedicated to Swift's lifelong friend, Stella. There are two prayers: "First He Wrote" and "Second Prayer," as well as the controversial "Abolishing Christianity." The volume ends with two essays: "Hints Towards An Essay on Conversation" and "Thoughts On Various Subjects." These essays were originally published between 1697 and 1732.
