BackCountry Navigator is fun-filled navigation software for the outdoor adventurer. Use it in a variety of outdoor adventures, from kayak touring to geocaching. This is a summary of what you can do with the product.
BackCountry uses free topo and aerial maps for the United States, downloaded directly from Terraserver-USA.
- There are topographical maps at 4 meters per pixel scale, based on 1:24k.
- There is aerial photography in most areas at up to 1 meter pixel.
- To download maps, simply mark multiple rectangles of interest. No limitations to a particular county, state, or quadrangle.
- Download maps whenever your Pocket PC is connected to the internet: through wifi, wireless data plan, or ActiveSync.
- No need for desktop calibration software, CD-Roms, or subscriptions. Map data is public domain.
The software automatically loads multiple map scales, and displays them at a variety of zoom levels. You can freely pan and explore the area of your downloaded map.
There are also a number of ways you can add points of interest to your newly created map.
- Import places from the USGS database of over 2 million names.
- Define your own custom waypoints, limited only by the size of your storage card.
- Import geocache waypoints from LOC files to see them on the map.
- Import premium geocaching data from GPX files to see both cache symbols and formatted html descriptions and clues!
- Import other GPX files for waypoints and tracks marked by other GPS users.
Armed with a feature filled map, navigate in the outdoors with the help of a GPS Receiver.
- Use just about any GPS receiver, compact flash, bluetooth, cabled, or builtin, that sends data in NMEA.
- Use Automatic Detection to find your GPS, or specify the port and baud rate if you already know it.
- See your position on a moving map and navigate to waypoints of your choice with the compass control.
- Mark your own trail using the track recording feature. Export your track and waypoints in GPX format to share with others, or to view in Google Earth or other desktop software.
There are few limits to what you can do with BackCountry Navigator, and the software continually improves based on suggestions from users like you.
BackCountry Navigator has a website of the same name where you can find support, software walkthroughs, and news about new or future features. Register there to participate in a forum with other BackCountry Navigator users, and to learn about new features and updates as they come out. A license to the software entitles you to all updates with the same major version number.
BackCountry Navigator has a new Desktop Edition (Available separately) that runs on your Windows PC. Download maps and preview them on the big screen. Files created on the desktop are 100% compatible with the mobile version
Have fun trying the software, and even more fun in the outdoors!
