IrSquirt is an application that allows existing PalmOS based applications to 'Beam' files via infrared to and from PocketPC based PDAs, including pre-PocketPC 2002 devices. No modification to the existing PalmOS applications is required.
Background
PalmOS based devices use an industry standard called "IrOBEX" (IrDA Object Exchange) for infrared file transfers. This is the same protocol used in a number of personal organizers and infrared equipped cellular telephones. Palm and most PalmOS based applications refer to the use of this protocol as 'Beaming'. Presumably 'Beaming' is intended to conjure up images of svelte pre-Priceline.com William Shatner transferring important information to his pointy eared sidekick.
Although Microsoft was directly involved with the development of the IrOBEX specification, Windows CE devices prior to PocketPC 2002 did not offer it. Instead, for reasons known only to Microsoft, CE devices and Microsoft applications used a closed, proprietary protocol called 'IrSquirt'. Presumably 'IrSquirt' is intended to conjure up images of a much older Captain Kirk sitting on the, uh, 'command chair' struggling with a photon torpedo.
That disturbing thought notwithstanding, the fact remained that Microsoft PDAs prior to PocketPC 2002 cannot communicate with Palm PDAs via infrared. The devices use different, and very incompatible, communication protocols.
Enter IrSquirt 1.1. This application allows the user to switch PalmOS beaming from IrOBEX to Microsoft's IrSquirt protocol for sending and receiving. Applications act as before, they are simply communicating using a different protocol.
