The Continental Army - Historical Resources Branch, US Army Center of Military History. War of American Independence: Lineages of the Units of the Continental Army.
The unit lineages which follow first appeared in 1983 in the Center's published book, The Continental Army. They are posted here to provide soldiers, researchers and genealogists with expanded access. The format used is adapted from that used for the official Lineage and Honors Certificates prepared by the U.S. Army Center of Military History with two differences: the data have been summarized to safe space, and the format modified to fit the peculiarities of the Revolutionary War.
The 177 lineages cover every permanent unit of the Continental Army, the regular force under the control of the Continental Congress, the first national government. Provisional units, such as Knowlton's Rangers of 1776 or the Light Infantry Corps, are not included nor are any units of the militia or state troops unless they later became permanent elements of the Continental Army. The lineages are grouped into nineteen sections. Fourteen cover units raised from specific states or colonies, including Canada, which was to have become the fourteenth state. These are commonly referred to as state lines.
Two of the remaining sections cover infantry regiments not raised from a specific state: the extra Continental regiments and the Additional Continental regiments. The other sections include the lineages of artillery units; the light dragoons and other mounted formations; and a miscellaneous section for various specialized organizations. Units within each section are arranged in numerical order, starting with the arrangement as it existed in 1777 and followed by other units listed under the designation used during the organization's most significant period of service. Those nicknames commonly used at the time are also included in the lineages. -- Engagements cited in these lineages are not those used for the official named campaigns of the United States Army and cited on the Center's Lineage and Honors Certificates. Instead, the engagements in this listing are more specific and are provided to give users more precise assistance in conducting further research.
