  The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson - This 1886 novel illustrates the dangers of science and the duality of human nature for both good and evil. Dr. Jekyll invents an potion that brings out the evil side of his own nature in an attempt to eradicate his immoral characteristics.
