GpsMid - free, fully offline (onboard), vector based map application for your mobile phone. It displays your current position on a zoomable map and can be used to search for and route to roads or points of interest of your liking. As all data is stored in a compact binary format on your phone you will incur no charges for extra data downloads or route calculations. So this is ideal for when you go abroad or into areas with poor mobile phone coverage, but can also be useful to save battery life or other network charges.
Features GpsMid currently supports:
•Vector rendering of roads, areas and points of interest
•Displaying the map either north on top or in the direction of driving
•Centering the map to a position received from your GPS:
◦NMEA GPS-unit with bluetooth connection.
◦Devices with built-in JSR179 compatible location provider
◦Based on Cell-ID (using opencellid.org)
•Zooming in and out to arbitrary levels of detail.
•Displaying the name of the street you are on and the maximum speed you may travel.
•Searching for a name (street, city or POI) and jumping to it on the map
•Searching for close by points of interest
•Calculating a route to a target street and navigate to it with voice guidance and textual instructions
•Choosing if your route should be optimised for car, bicycle or just plain walking
•Adding and deleting of waypoints to the map
•Recording and displaying of track logs
•Importing and exporting track logs and waypoints to and from GPX
•Taking geotagged photos with your mobile
•Fully customizing which OSM features are used in GpsMid and how you want your map to look
GpsMid uses map data from OpenStreetMap ( www.openstreetmap.org ), a wiki based open source map. OpenStreetMap's level of detail is still variable accross areas, but in an increasing number of areas, particularly in cities, it's level of detail is very comparable to, if not often better than that found on typical commercial maps, in particular for pedestrian or bicycle routing. It also may include countries other map providers may not have. So please have a look to see if your area is covered well. Furthermore, as a wiki, you are always able and invited to help improve it and GpsMid also tries to give you the tools to do so.
Customiztion
By using the the styling capabilities of GpsMid, you can adjust what features you are interested in and can optimise it to your pattern of use. For example you can include contours and highlight small paths if you are going hiking, show lifts if you are going skiing, or just use the default style for a typical road navigation view.
Getting GpsMid
As GpsMid is offline, you will need to upload the map data of your area to your phone. It is completely free of charge for as many maps as you like. We have a few selected cities and countries ready on our home page at ( http://gpsmid.sourceforge.net/prebuild ), which is the easiest way to get going. On the other hand, if you want the full flexibility of styling your maps and choosing your own area, you can use the utility Osm2GpsMid (a converter program for your PC, http://sourceforge.net/projects/gpsmid/files/ ), download the data from OpenStreetMap and include exactly the area you want. For more information on how to create map data see http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/gpsmid/index.php?title=Getting_started
