TwitterGPS is a location-aware Twitter client which runs on GPS-enabled devices.
TwitterGPS enables Twitter users to exchange twitter messages (tweets) which contain information about their locations and then view these on maps - either on the phone or on a PC browser.
This Java MIDlet is easy to download, install and use. It enables users to:
* Post updates to Twitter with links to their current location. These are links to widely used map sites such as OpenStreetMap, Google Maps and Microsoft Live.
* Get recent tweets from friends.
* Display maps from OpenStreetMap.
TwitterGPS means that Twitter users can enjoy location-aware social networking without the need to switch to a special location based social network. TwitterGPS uses the standard Twitter API.
For security, TwitterGPS confirms that a user has set their Twitter account to protect their updates, before posting updates with location links. If the user has not protected their Twitter account, updates can only be posted without location links.
OpenStreetMap(OSM) is a collaborative project to create free, editable maps on the web. Open TwitterGPS uses the standard OpenStreetMap API and supports map zooming and panning.
When a user has posted an update with a location link, their friends who have PC access to Twitter can just click on the link in the tweet to open a map of the user's location. The choice of map site is determined by the user who originates the tweet.
Friends equipped with TwitterGPS who receive a tweet containing a location link created by Twitter GPS can open an OSM map of the originator's location and then zoom and pan across the map.
Twitter uses wireless packet data to efficiently get tweets, post updates and open maps. TwitterGPS supports simple, high level settings for managing the phone's GPS capabilities.
