In Moby Dick, the narrator Ishmael describes Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit for a gigantic white whale, in his attempt to avenge the loss of one leg. Written under the influence of neighbor Nathaniel Hawthorne and an increased exposure to literature, the book is complex, epic, and tragic. An immediate commercial failure, Moby Dick has since earned its place among the great works of American literature. First published in 1851.
