MapMakr If you’re an aid worker responding to a humanitarian crisis, up to date, accurate, and easy to read maps are vital. Knowing whether a bridge has collapsed, a road is passable and where you can land planes bringing in aid is really important. If you’re a refugee arriving at a camp, which looks like a city of tents then it’s really useful to know where the field hospitals, sanitary facilities and food tents are. These are the reasons behind the MapMaker application.
Often the disaster itself has rendered the existing maps of an area useless. An earthquake might level a hospital, a landslide block a road and a hurricane might destroy a bridge. Satellite imagery can really help here but it can be difficult to get up to date images and it can only tell you so much. Taking advice from friends who know about this stuff I have built an application for aid workers and anyone with an Android phone to easily create maps in an emergency. Using the GPS and camera on the phone anyone can quickly collect data about roads, paths, bridges, buildings and any other information pertinent to the relief effort. It is designed to be as simple to use as possible but have the features needed to collect enough information.
An aid worker could go about their work whilst creating a map of the road network, highlighting potential aircraft landing strips or taking geotagged photographs of buildings that could be used as temporary accommodation. When they get back to base they can export the data in KML format and then view it in Google Earth. They can combine their data with their colleagues in Google Earth to create a map of the area. These maps can then be printed out and distributed to those who need them
