The Adventure Collection - When was the last time you went on an adventure? Now you can with "The Adventure Collection" featuring H.G. Wells'' "The Time Machine," "The Adventures of Robin Hood" and Mark Twain''s "The Prince and the Pauper."
In "The Time Machine" journey with H.G. Wells from a drawing room in Victorian England, through a hail of bombs from unnamed wars, through the final cataclysm of a nuclear holocaust, to the distant future. There, the paradisiacal world of the Eloi hides a horrifying secret - the Morlocks.
Born in 1866 in Kent, England, H.G. Wells worked as a school teacher before publishing "The Time Machine" in 1895, "The Invisible Man" in 1897 and "The War Of The Worlds" in 1898. He died in 1946 after having seen his predictions of tanks, military aircraft, WWI and WWII, the London blitz and the atomic bomb come true.
One of the greatest adventures ever written, "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" is the story of the aristocratic Sir Robin of Locksley, who returns from the Crusades to find his father murdered and his lands stolen by the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. Forming his band of merry men in Sherwood Forest, Robin sets out to relieve the rich of their wealth, return the throne to its rightful owner, King Richard the Lionhearted, and win the hand of the lovely Maid Marion.
Born in 1853, Howard Pyle was primarily an illustrator and taught legions of young students including N.C. Wyeth. Besides "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood," his works included four volumes on the Arthurian Legends and a book on pirates. Pyle died in 1911.
In "The Prince and the Pauper" by Mark Twain when a young London beggar, Tom Canty, meets the future King of England Edward VI by accident, each is struck by their resemblance to one another, and each is curious about the other''s life. They soon switch clothes and lives, but are then unable to switch back.
Mark Twain was born in 1835 in Missouri and worked as a river-boat pilot and newspaperman before turning to writing. He published his masterpieces "Tom Sawyer" in 1881 and Huckleberry Finn" in 1884. Twain died in 1910.
