The Animal Collection - Now you can enjoy some of the most famous animal stories of all time on your handheld with "The Animal Collection" featuring Anna Sewell''s "Black Beauty" "Dog of Flanders" and "Greyfriars Bobby" by Eleanor Atkinson.
Possibly the most famous animal story ever written, "Black Beauty" is the story of a horse who passes through many owners. He goes from a happy life as a riding and carriage horse through misery as a mistreated town cab horse, to eventual happiness in a secure home.

Born in 1820 in Yarmouth, England, Anna Sewell was a horse lover from a young age and  she protested the practice of tail docking and the use of bearing reins, which held a horse''s head up in an unnatural position. Her only work, Sewell wrote "Black Beauty" in her mid fifties, and it was published in 1877, three months before her death.

"Nello and Patrasche were left all alone in the world" is the famous first sentence of "A Dog of Flanders" by Ouida, whose real name was Louisa de la Ramee. Published in 1872, it is the story of a young boy and his beloved canine companion, and is considered the first modern dog story.

Louisa de la Ranee was born in 1839 in Bury St. Edmunds, England and wrote over forty novels during her lifetime. She died in Italy in 1908.

When John Gray died in 1858 and was buried in the old Greyfriars Churchyard in Edinburgh, Scotland, his devoted Skye Terrier, Bobby, was one of the mourners. The next morning, churchyard workers found Bobby lying on top of the newly-made grave, and tried to shoo him away, but Bobby refused to go. Bobby spent the next fourteen years keeping a constant watch and guard over the grave until his own death in 1872. The next year, Baroness Burdett Coutts erected a fountain in Edinburgh with a statue atop it in Bobby''s likeness to honor the the little dog''s loyalty and devotion.

It fell to American author Eleanor Atkinson to document this true Scottish story. Atkinson was born in 1863, published "Greyfriars Bobby" in 1912 and died in 1942.
