GPSRadar is a Palm application which displays points-of-interest (POIs) relative to your current position using GPS. A comma separated value (CSV) list of up to several thousand POIs can be converted on a desktop pc, from a text file to a Palm PDB database. This is transferred to the PDA and read at start-up by GPSRadar. As you move around the nearest POIs are displayed and you can zoom in or out.
The application was originally designed to be used as a speed camera warning device. A warning sound is produced when a POI (camera) is within a set radius and arc ahead of your current position. The application is very simple and allows continuous hands-free operation on a car dashboard mount. In addition it has a night mode, where the display can be set to black with red features for night use. The display is zoomed in and out using the up/down buttons. It could just as easily be used for geocaching as it will show your position relative to the cache.
Both serial cable and Bluetooth GPS receivers can be used, with a wide range of baud rates. The application is recommended to be run on PalmOS 5 and upwards on devices such as Tungstens T, T2, T3, E, Zire 71 etc. The application may work on OS 4 on an older Dragonball processor but you'll probably find it too slow. A Tungsten T / Zire 71 can be considered minimum. The application has been tested on a Tungsten T with an Emtac/Socket Bluetooth GPS.
· Connects to wired serial port or Bluetooth GPS receivers.
· Updates position once a second.
· Configurable choice of warning area radius and arc.
· Beeps when POI is within warning area.
· Choice of statute miles or kilometres.
· Displays current speed.
· Displays current position.
· Zoom in and out with display of scale.
· Red night mode display.
· Add current position as POI into database.
· Support for multiple databases with colour-coded POIs.
· Create, edit and delete databases and POIs.
· Import and Export to and from Palm memos
· The application is fully functioning except that it disconnects from the GPS receiver after 20 minutes and requires that the application is restarted. Registering removes this restriction.
