Guitar Tuner is a simple interactive app which can determine the exact pitch of your guitar strings by using a microphone and a sound card. It can also work without a microphone. As a last resort you can plug headsets into the microphone input. It works with most sound cards.
If you think you can tune your guitar exactly using only reference tones, you are wrong. Theoretically, when you are using reference tones and the frequencies are roughly the same, a great resonance is produced. In this case the reference tone becomes a source of forced oscillation, which causes strings oscillation on the same frequency. And it sounds like the guitar is tuned. But actually the string frequency can greatly differ from the reference tone. That's why it is preferable to use a passive system which only listens and does not provide any sound oscillations.
