Driving Holidays in the Himalayas– is part of a series of books that venture to bring forth the breathtaking and enchanting beauty of the Himalayas spread across the states on the northern and eastern part of India. The other books in the series take you through Ladakh, Zanskar, Himachal and Sikkim. The Author Mr.Koko Singh has travelled extensively in the Himalayas for over twenty-five years. He is a volunteering consultant to an NGO(SRUTI) but the mountains have always been his first love. Despite many time constraints people often opt to drive to the hills to relax and rejuvenate their minds and be back at work again in a few days. Driving Holidays provides the perfect itineraries that one can follow to explore the exotic locales of Uttaranchal – the well known ones as well as the ones that are yet to be touched by commercialization.
Besides the Itineraries and Costs the book tells a lot about the people who are native to the state, their histories, their ways of living and beliefs. The religious significance of the State has not been overlooked with details given about Ashrams, temples and other holy places. In fact, Uttarakhand is called (Devbhoomi) The Abode of the Gods and that itself emphasizes the immense religious importance that it has held since the Vedic Ages. The book’s striking and amazing photographs give a peek into the splendid scenic beauty the Himalayas have to offer and leave the reader wanting to “be there” and witness the “pristine sunset or tall peaks” with their own eyes. The book also gives Interesting Facts and Peculiarities of the places that make them all the more vibrant and adventurous. Written in a breezy style and with Road Maps provided, the itineraries are short yet they cover a reasonable cross section of the state which can be easily adhered to and enjoyed as well. An Expert Guide to trekking and rafting provides an insight to the over fifty trekking and rafting options that abound the state. The exhaustive list of staying and eating recommendations are very informative and quite helpful for the frequent travellers as well as the occasional tourist. Not only does the book cover the details of the well known hill stations of the State like Nainital, Mussoorie and Jim Corbett National Park but it also has a lot of rare information of the much lesser known yet stunningly beautiful places like Dhanaulti, Lansdowne and Auli.
