Waterbottle from the QJ forums has released a homebrew puzzle game for the PSP today titled Petals Around the Rose. Now, this title may appear to be quite boring and simple but believe me it isn't. In this puzzle game you roll 5 normal dices ( and get the question: How many petals are there around the rose? There is always one correct answer to this question and the answer depends on what the dices show.
The only way to figure out this puzzle is to think laterally with an open mind and using a bit of mathematics. Apparently the smarter you are the longer it will take you to complete this puzzle. I've tried it for abut 5 minutes now and the closest I've got to knowing the key to this game are all random guesses.
Waterbottle originally played this game online (here), and here's what they said about the game:
I was introduced to "Petals Around the Rose" by Dr. Richard Duke at the University of Michigan . Dr. Duke used to begin each of his gaming/simulation courses with this exercise. While some students would solve the problem right away, others would struggle all semester. It had taken Dr. Duke well over a year himself, and he would always explain that the smarter you were, the longer it took to figure it out.
The game is quite simple. Only a basic understanding of math is required and an open and creative mind. The game can be used as an example of how different people look at the world differently, and how these different ways of looking can yield different answers. In "Petals Around the Rose" there is always one correct answer. The problem is how we define the problem.
This version was created by Waterbottle in C++ and starts by rolling the dices. You then uses up and down to select how many petals you think there are around the rose. Good luck trying to complete this puzzle and try not to spoil the key to this in the comments if you find it! Tip from Waterbottle: It takes time to understand it, it's a specific pattern that decide what the answer is. just try and think creative and think about the question, how many petals are there around the rose.
