After customizing your handheld's XMB, maybe you would like to do the same with the background image. It seems that homebrew coder xmOD was thinking along the same line and that's why he came up with a handy app called PSP BG Split/Merge v1.0.
Just like the name implies, the application is for splitting and merging the 01-12.bmp file to create custom backgrounds. xmOD mentioned that he was only able to test this app with 60x34 backgrounds.
However, he added that while splitting is limited to 01-12.bmp file of up to 500KB, merging can be done using files of any size. He also said that the program is stable. It may cause bricks IF THE USER MANIPULATES THE IMAGES IN ANY OTHER WAY THAN INTENDED. As xmOD said, the app is 102% stable and doesn't cause bricks, but xmOD won't be responsible for any partial/permanent bricks.
Without any further jabber, here's how to customize your PSP's default background. You will need as well Microsoft's .NET Framework 2.0 or higher.
Splitting:
1. Run the exe file of the program.
2. Enter the absolute path to the place where your 01-12.bmp is located under the split 01-12.bmp section (i.e. If 01-12.bmp is located in C:new folder then in the text box, type C:new folder-12.bmp).
3. Hit the Split button to split the file.
4. Go to the same place where your 01-12.bmp is and you will find a folder called "Split 01-12.bmp" which contains the split individual files.
5. You can edit any or all of the 12 backgrounds.
Merging:
* Enter the absolute path to the Split files folder in the "Split Files Folder" box under the merge 01-12.bmp section (i.e. If the folder is located in C:new folder then, type C:new foldersplit 01-12.bmp)
* Hit Merge button to merge all the files.
* Now look in the same split files folder for the merged 01-12.bmp.
