Drops of blood from the crown of thorns on his head were to have fallen on the stair treads. Worshippers get down on their bare knees to climb the marble stairway, which is covered with wooden planks, out of respect for Jesus and as penance. At the top, they arrive at the ?Holy of Holies?, as the former private chapel of the popes is still called.
