Brideshead Revisited describes a lost way of life, that of the British upper classes beginning in the late 1920s on up to World War II. The narrator, Charles Ryder, is drawn into this decadent world when, as a student at Oxford, he meets and falls in love with Lord Sebastian Flyte, scion of the immensely wealthy Marchmain family. It is while visiting the Marchmain home, Brideshead, that Charles realizes he has become attracted to Sebastian's sister, Julia.
"It is thus I like to remember Sebastian, as he was that summer,
when we wandered alone together through that enchanted palace..."

Evelyn Waugh was born in London in 1903, and educated at Oxford. Fired from a teaching position for public drunkenness, he finally found success in writing. A convert to Roman Catholicism, Waugh was injured during WWII while traveling with Winston Churchill's son, Randolph, and he wrote Brideshead Revisited during his convalescence. Waugh collapsed and died on his toilet on April 10, 1966.
