Joseph Conrad was born in Berdichev, Ukraine on December 3, 1857. Orphaned at 11, he became a merchant seaman at 17, and sailed the world - Australia, the Indian Ocean, Borneo, Malaysia, South America, the South Pacific, up the Congo River and the East Indies. Serving on a British ship, Conrad learned English and became an inveterate Anglophile, eventually settling in Cantebury, England and becoming an English citizen.
"What makes mankind tragic is not that they are the
victims of nature, it is that they are conscious of it. Joseph Conrad
