The Science Fiction Collection - If you love science fiction, then The Science Fiction Collection is a must-have. It includes "The Moon Pool,""The Metal Monster" and "The Face in the Abyss" by Abraham Merritt, and the only novel ever written by the "father of science fiction," Hugo Gernsback, "Ralph 124C 41+."
Abraham Merritt was born in 1884 in New Jersey and began his career as a newspaper reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer. Moving to The American Weekly in 1911, he spent the next 26 years as an associated editor, editing by day, and by night creating mysterious, alternative worlds and realities. He published "The Moon Pool" in 1919, "The Metal Monster" in 1920 and "The Face in the Abyss" in 1923.
The "father of science fiction," Hugo Gernsback, was also born in 1884 in Luxembourg, and emigrated to the United States in 1905. In short order, Gernsbach designed and marketed the first home radio, began selling electronic parts through a mail order catalog and published the world's first radio magazine, "Modern Electrics".
Gernsback serialized "Ralph 124C 41+" in that magazine beginning in 1911, and the novel contains more successful predictions of future inventions than any other work ever published. Included in his prediction of radar, were a scientific explanation of the theory, diagram, and the caveat that radar would have to wait until the perfection of the vacuum tube.
"Ralph 124C 41+" includes the following predictions:
• Plastics
• Stainless steel
• Jukeboxes
• Tape recorders
• Solar power
• The word "television"
• Fluorescent lighting
• The radio directional-finder
• Synthetic fabrics
• Liquid fertilizer
• Micro-film
• Tin foil
• Night baseball
• Loud speakers
• Glass skyscrapers
• Radio and television networls
• Tear gas
• Organ transplants
• Heliocopter buses
• Jet planes
• Voice prints
• Electronic music
• Radar
• Vending machines
In 1926 Gernsback began publishing "Amazing Stories", the first magazine dedicated to science fiction, and in 1933, he began publishing the first magazine dedicated to sex, "Sexology". At the time of his death in 1967, Gernsback held over 80 patents.
