TacMapper is a low cost, easy to use, highly functional Mobile GIS software package for professional and recreational users. It is a useful tool for anyone wants to use their PocketPC to view maps and images in the field. TacMapper provides tools to capture, analyze and edit geospatial information using GPS coordinates. Biologists, geologists, utility workers, law enforcement officials, military personnel, public safety officials, hikers, hunters, and anglers can all benefit from using TacMapper.
TacMapper supports a variety of digital image formats, ESRI shapefiles, and tabular data types. TacMapper can display TIF, GIF, JPEG, or BMP image files which have a World File definition file or a MapInfo TAB file. TacMapper can display and edit ESRI Point and Polyline Shapefiles. TacMapper can be used to edit Microsoft Access Databases which store spatial data as X and Y attributes in separate fields (known as X, Y event data).
TacMapper supports data in either Geographic decimal degree coordinates or in several hundred of the most common map projection systems used throughout the world. Additionally, TacMapper supports 248 different datums and 30 ellipsoids. TacMapper works with any serial GPS device that can output NMEA 0183 standard $GPGGA and $GPRMC sentences. TacMapper has been tested on a variety of GPS units including serial direct-connect devices, compact-flash, secure digital (SD) and Bluetooth devices.
