For their newest game the developers have decided to make use one of their more popular game characters Poyo. Poyo?s Nightmare is a top-down scrolling shooter which places much emphasis on navigating Poyo through a given set of obstacles aside from the normal annoying enemies associated with such games.
The story is simple, Poyo the game?s protagonist who after just winning the Table Tennis Championship and a long journey heads back home only to his dismay finds his native land infested with all sorts of deadly enemies that wouldn?t hesitate to gobble him up.
The gameplay is very simple actually, you the gamer must try to navigate Poyo as the screen scrolls downward. What makes this different from other top-down shooters is that Poyo is actually walking on the terrain itself meaning players will not only have to avoid the incoming enemies and their fire but also the occasional pitfalls. Another thing is that the levels have a given path and with the game scrolling the level area downwards you have to be smart in where you?re path is going to take you as taking a wrong path might mean falling in a hole or getting stuck and dying.
The game is also filled with power ups that greatly help Poyo in his quest to go home. In the game there are the more common weapon power ups which are a given in a shooter game. Some of these weapon power ups take the form of fruits thrown by Poyo and the better the power up the bigger and flashier the fruit Poyo throws. Ofcourse aside from the weapon power ups you have the defensive power ups such as an invulnerable shield which prevents Poyo from dying upon contact with any harmful object. The shield ofcourse has a time limit and can just suddenly die out at the most unfortunate times. All these power ups however can be possessed by having Poyo blow up the incoming objects such as rocks and logs and from time to time enemies will also drop power ups. One power up that I enjoyed using very much and which could be unique to this game is the speed power up which increases Poyo?s speed a lot and allows the player to maneuver better and easier. Another uniqe thing is how Poyo?s low level fire actually bounces off some objects such as rocks and tree stumps, this part of the game mechanics adds another dimension to the game as you can use the lying objects to bounce Poyo?s fire from one place to another.
At the end of each level is a huge boss and the screen progress takes a pause as Poyo and the big boss slugs it out. Sometimes the boss is accompanied by the level?s lower denizens to make the fight more challenging. Each boss has a set pattern that is easily studied and beaten in a short amount of time.
Graphically the game boasts some nicely done graphics, while they won?t win a prize as the number 1 most beautiful game the sheer number of enemies and environments that has been made (and nicely made I might add) should be applauded for and kudos given to the developers for presenting a lot of variation. On the sounds department the game also does okay but presents nothing more special.
The game in my opinion is a good and well made one, but that?s it its just good. It however does not excel among its peers in the shooting genre. Moreover what makes it different from all the other shooting games also hampers its replayability as the game?s level are designed in such a way that there are some points during the level that you just have to play the same way. The game is more of a one play-thru game unless the cute characters win you over in playing the game over and over again. Aside from all these the game is pretty short and can be finished in one concentrated play through. All these however does not detract the fact that the game is good and kudos to Microjocs for putting out a well made if a bit short game.
