The Thin Man Collection - In "The Thin Man," Nick and Nora Charles' vacation in Manhattan during Christmas is suddenly interrupted by a murder, and soon they and schnauzer Asta are hot on the trail of eccentric inventor Clyde Wynant. The Continental Op has his hands full in "The Dain Curse" with a diamond heist, murder, suicide and a strange religious cult. "The Glass Key" is the strange tale of tale of a political boss and his gambler buddy, and is the inspiration for the Coen Brothers' film "Miller's Crossing."
She sat up holding her cheek and looked around the room until she saw Morelli, nippers on one wrist, standing between two detectives. Morelli's face was a mess: the coppers had worked him over a little just for the fun of it. Nora glared at me. "You damned fool," she said, "you didn't have to knock me cold. I knew you'd take him, but I wanted to see it." One of the coppers laughed. "Jesus," he said admiringly, "there's a woman with hair on her chest."
The Thin Man
Dashiell Hammett
Born in 1894, Dashiell Hammett dropped out of school at age 13 and worked at a number of jobs before landing in the San Francisco office of the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Hammett worked there for over ten years, picking up enough experiences to fuel his writing for the rest of his life. During WWI, Hammett served as an ambulance driver and returned home with tuberculosis. His fragile health made him unable to continue working as a detective, and he turned to writing. In 1924 he introduced the popular character, The Continental Op, and other hard-boiled characters soon followed including Sam Spade in 1930's "The Maltese Falcon" and Nick and Nora Charles 1934's "The Thin Man."
Working in Hollywood as a screenwriter, Hammett met the playwright Lillian Hellman and they remained together for the next 31 years until Hammett's death in 1961. In 1951, Hammett was jailed for five months for refusing to testify before a McCarthy-era hearing. He spent the remainder of his life living in near seclusion in upstate New York.
