Considered a masterpiece of horror and psychological literature, "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is the unforgettable story of a kindly doctor who wishes to research the good and evil sides of man. Taking a potion of his own design, he becomes the odious Mr. Hyde. At first exhilarated by the freedom of becoming a creature without a conscience, he soon comes to abhor this darker side of himself and ceases taking the potion. Unfortunately, he begins to transform into Hyde spontaneously in his sleep, then while awake.
"... and at that Mr. Hyde broke out of all bounds and clubbed him to the earth.
And next moment, with ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot
and hailing down a storm of blows ..."
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Robert Louis Stevenson
A native of Scotland, Stevenson traveled extensively during his life and in France met a married American woman, Fanny Osbourne. When Fanny returned to her husband in California, Stevenson followed her there and they were married the following year. Stevenson and his family spent the last years of his life in Samoa where he wrote about the evils of colonization.
