Beginning with the publication of Horace Walpole's "The Castle of Otranto" in 1764, the gothic horror genre reached a fever pitch in late 18th and early 19th century England with Ann Radcliffe's "The Mysteries of Udolpho" in 1794 and "The Italian in 1797, Matthew Lewis's "The Monk" in 1796, Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey" in 1817, Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" in 1818, and Charles Maturin's "Melmoth the Wanderer" in 1820. The gothic horror tradition - terror, mystery, the supernatural, darkness, death, madness and secrets - continues today with such writers as Stephen King and Anne Rice.
