ComicBookDS Gnese has just recently released a DS homebrew comic reader and/or image viewer which may just become a personal favorite for this writer soon. And in comes ComicBook DS v1.3. The creator of this homebrew notes that the whole package is composed of two parts. The first part is PictoDS by Nicom00k which you can use on your PC to convert your image files into an .nds file. You can even convert images that are compressed in either .zip, .rar, .cbz, or .cbr formats. After generating the .nds file using PictoDS, in comes Gnese's contribution which you can then safely install into your DS.
Just run the .nds file and you can start reading your downloaded comics or images on the go. What's nice about Gnese's app is that it has a pretty well-polished interface. It's easy to use, and you can choose to read your comics in either the traditional DS position with the thumbnails and menu at the bottom screen and the close up of what your're viewing at the top screen, or in the "book" position with the close up on the left screen and the menu on the right. Left-handed? Then just flip everything so that the touchscreen and menu is on the left.
In any case in v1.3, Gnese noted the following changes:
* Progressive zoom feature. Image can be zoomed in and out using some buttons or the on-screen scrollbar. * A lock icon is added. When locked, the icons remains on the screen. * Closelit support. When the DS is closed, screens are switched off and energy is saved. * Smoother animation for transitions. * Key configuration changed, mainly for left handed landscape mode. Two buttons are also dedicated to the zoom feature (they were previously used for page change). * The pictoDS icon is back.
Gnese has also noted that Java or MS .Net Framework may need to be installed, but when we tested this app, everything went fine without either. In any case, for a comprehensive guide, tutorials and troubleshooting help, just head over to Gnese's site by clicking on the "via" link below.
